Professional Associations

The World Federation of Occupational Therapy , (WFOT), was founded in 1952 when 29 countries came together to discuss topics surrounding occupational therapy programs internationally. There are now 69 countries as part of the WFOT, and they follow this constitution.


  • to act as the official international organization for the promotion of occupational therapy; 
  • to promote international cooperation among occupational therapy associations, therapists and other allied professional groups; 
  • to advance the practice and standards of occupational therapy; 
  • to help maintain the ethics and to advance the interests of the profession; 
  • to facilitate the international exchange and placements of therapists and students; 
  • to facilitate the exchange of information; 
  • to promote the education and training of therapists; and 
  • to hold international congresses.

The American Occupational Therapy Association,(AOTA) is a member organization in the United States that is responsible for guiding and developing occupational therapy’s standards and code of ethics and for defining the professions scope of practice. The association is made up of occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, and students from all areas of practice. 

Florida Occupational Therapist Association, (FOTA), is also a member organization that seeks to serve as a collective body to help support and develop occupational therapy practice, in Florida.
